Selection out of 70 studies composed by

Jorma Pitkänen

(Finland, 7.4.1941 - 8.2.2022)

Thanks to Henry Tanner for the following data:

"Jorma Pitkänen, from Lahti, Finland, was born on April 7, 1941.

Within chess, he has been active as a player, solver, and composer.

He also has organized some jubilee tourneys which he has judged, and he has published various collections of his problems.

His first collection, “Ensilaadintoja” (“First Compositions”) was published in 1990.
Pitkänen has composed and published more than 7500 chess problems and studies.

His first chess problem, a study, was published in 1965. After that there was a long break, and he started his active composing career – which is still going on – in 1988.

Many of his problems have been published only in his collections, not elsewhere.
Numerous problems by Pitkänen have been awarded, in both national and international competitions,

and mainly for this reason he was given, by the Finnish Chess Problem Society, the national title of Master in Composition, in 2009.
Pitkänen is a versatile composer, and he has published direct-mates, selfmates, helpmates, studies as well as fairy problems.
His main hobby, outside chess, is fishing."
