Some studies of more than 480 composed by

Leonid Ivanovich Kubbel

(Russia, 25.12.1891 OS = 6.1.1892 NS - 18.4.1942).

More studies can be found at the website webduif, with some more information about him (in Dutch).

Also more about him can be found on wikipedia in more languages.

Timothy Whitworth has written a book about him and reports about his name and birthdate:

Leonid Kubbel's given names were Karl Artur Leonid. Some time after the revolution he adopted the forenames Leonid Ivanovich, but he was still K. A. L. Kubbel when he sent compositions abroad, and even at home he continued to use his original initials as well as his adopted ones. The title page of his 1925 collection of studies declares the author to be "Leonid (K. A. L.) Kubbel". From 1926 onwards, he was often accorded both sets of initials when he contributed pieces to Soviet chess magazines: "L. I. (K. A. L.) Kubbel". In 1937, however, with the Great Purge raging, this practice came to an end. From then on, he was simply "L. I. Kubbel". In the list of Composers by Alphabet, I think his name should be shown in both its forms, perhaps like this: "Kubbel, Karl Artur Leonid (Leonid Ivanovich)".

Actually, we know his date of birth precisely. We just have to note that in 1918 Russia switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. So Kubbel was born when the Julian calendar held sway in Russia and his date of birth on that calendar was 25.12.1891. The Julian calendar at that time was 12 days behind the Gregorian calendar, so on the Gregorian calendar Kubbel was born on 6.1.1892. To distinguish between the two calendars, we follow a date with the letters "OS" (for Old Style/Julian calendar) or "NS" (for New Style/Gregorian calendar). So in giving Kubbel's date of birth we have a choice between "25.12.1891 OS" and "6.1.1892 NS", for they are the same day. The abbreviations "OS" and "NS" in this context are well established in English and will be found in a good English dictionary. An explanation of them can also be found on the internet.
