Wladimir Naef (1919-2006) was born in Moscow. His family returned to Switzerland in 1920,
Thereby growing up bilingual. After studying as a mechanical engineer at ETH (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule) Zurich, he worked in various industries
Heavyweight hydraulics, most recently as director of a machine factory.
Wladimir Naef was a strong chessplayer, who won the 1952 Zurich City Cup and in 1959 the Coupe Suisse. With the SG Zürich he was in the SMM 13 times
Swiss champion, and from 1953 to 1963 he was a member of the national team. At a young age he was also a successful tennis and table tennis player.
In 1976, he was one of the co-founders of the Association of Swiss Friends of Art.

As successor of Samuel Isenegger he directed from 1957 until 1979 the study section of the «Schweizerischen Schachzeitung».
He composed over 60 studies - Mainly for the "SSZ".
