Wlodzimierz Proskurowski

Composer born in Warsaw who for some years lived in Sweden, adopting the citizenship of the country.

Later he settled in the United States of America where he was professor of mathematics at the University of Los Angeles, and worked in scientific computing.

He started in composition at an age of twenty specializing in studies of a few pieces and also composed a variety of solo pawns.

Nine of his finals were chosen by F. Bondarenko for his book "Etiud v peshechnom okonchnji" (Moscow, 1973).

In the summer of 1967, Włodzimierz Proskurovski spent many hours in the Warsaw National Library,
saw thousands of pages of the Głos Poranny newspaper and other material of the thirties,
and was able to rediscover nine completely forgotten studies of Szaja Kozłowski.
He published this result in Szachy, No. 5, 6 and 7 in 1968.

EG114: The fruits from my chess garden - A Selection of Endgames, by W.Proskurowski, published by Chess Enterprises of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, 1993.

In English. Having emigrated to Sweden in 1969 from his native Poland to avoid the effects of politically inspired anti-semitism, the author is now a mathematics academic in California.

This book of a mere 50 pages (in fact 37 pages - 38 studies - followed by appended matter) is the briefly discursive autobiography of a polyglot study-composer. It is tinged with sadness.

More about his professional career can be found at the website of University of Southern California.

In 1983 this picture was made where his polish chess friends are and where the real names in polish are shown.
