To honour the 70th birthday of Jan Timman, chess legend and prolific study composer, the Royal Dutch Chess Federation (KNSB) announces an endgame study composition tourney (free theme).

Prizes: 150/125/100/75/50 € (sponsored by KNSB)

Special prizes, offered by friends and colleagues of Jan Timman:

  • Hans Böhm: 15 chess king statues, made by the Dutch artist Margaret Wevers (www.schaakkunst.nl);

  • Harold van der Heijden: two HHdbVI study databases (www.hhdbvi.nl);

  • Jan Sprenger: 100 € for the best study by a strong practical player (criteria: 2000+ rating, not more than ten entries in HHdbVI);

  • KNSB: chess books by Jan Timman

Timeline:

  • Deadline for submissions: 1 October 2021

  • Preliminary award: 14 December 2021 (70th birthday JT)

  • Deadline for claims: 14 January 2022

  • Final award: 31 January 2022

Coproductions are allowed. There is a maximum of three studies per composer. Double money prizes will not be awarded; instead, the composer will receive the more valuable prize.

5th Youth Chess Composing Challenge


This year, 5th YCCC is open to the U23 generation (born no earlier than 01.01.1998),

and to all different genres of chess composition.

All young chess composers, and those who would like to try their hands in this kind of chess art,

are invited to take part in three different sections (two of them with the set thematic conditions)!

The deadline for submission of the entries is 30th September.
The results are planned to be announced on 22th October 2021,

during the Closing ceremony of the Rhodes WCCC 2021.

44th World Chess Olympiad of 2020

The All-Russian Public Organization “The Chess Federation of Russia” (CFR) and, at the request of the CFR, the Commission for Chess Composition (CCC) announce an international chess composing tournament dedicated to the 44th World Chess Olympiad of 2020.

The chess composing tournament will be conducted in the following eight sections: twomovers; threemovers; moremovers; endgame studies;

helpmates; selfmates in 2-12 moves; fairy compositions; retros and proofgames.

The number of entries from one author in a section must not exceed two.

Moreover, only one individual composition will be allowed, i.e. one author can maximally submit oneindividual and one joint composition or two joint entries.

The number of co-authors of collective compositions is not limited.

All participants are asked to present their entries not only on diagrams but also in FEN notation.

Entries without such in-formationwill not be accepted for the tournament.

The preliminary award will be posted on the website http://www.selivanov.world/. The preliminary award may also be presented on a number of other sites. After the publication of the preliminary award, the participants will have 1 month for submitting their claims of defects and anticipations. After analyzing the claims, the judges will prepare the final award in each section. The CFR will present certificates and commemorative medals to the winners of the tournament. The judges will also receive commemorative medals.

EG, the only periodical exclusively devoted to endgame studies, announces an informal tourney for original studies.
The studies and the award will be published in EG.

You are strongly urged to only send your best and most creative works.
The original’s editor will only select very good studies for publication.

International formal tourney in memory of Pal Benko

The Chess Artistry Competition aims to celebrate the artistic side of chess. Endgame studies embody many of the most beautiful elements of chess and composers put an enormous effort into compositions which delight thousands of enthusiasts around the world.

Criteria for submitted compositions: Preference will be given to studies which are likely to appeal to over-the-board players. Natural initial positions and clear-cut analysis are preferred. Each author can send one study or two joint-compositions.

Prize:There will be trophies for the top three winners and special prizes for particular categories, such as young (under-25) composers. As usual, the award will consist of prizes, honourable mentions and commendations. The participants will also receive a memento representing this Chess Artistry event.
